ABSTRACT
Many advanced countries, such as the USA and the UK, have used Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as one strategy for school safety. Relevant studies were undertaken to apply the design to the Korean context. South Korea is, in fact, already applying CPTED to various fields, such as urban planning, residential facilities, and school facilities. As the existing research on CPTED has concentrated on the development of the evaluated items themselves, though, there have been limitations on the ability to identify the level of and changes in CPTED within each school building using the holistic approach.
The goal of the study is to develop a quantitative evaluation model that can help school staff easily analyze the weaknesses of each school in terms of CPTED. Since the model is able to prioritize CPTED items within the school environment, it is expected that each school will be able to effectively improve the quality of CPTED.
