본 연구는 지방대학생들의 학교이탈에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 규명하고, 나아가 경기도 지역과 이외의 지역대학 간의 차이를 검증해 보기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 한국의 4년제 지방 사립대학에 재학 중인 학생들을 대상으로 하였으며, 설문조사 분석을 통해 나타난 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교이탈 의도에 따른 변수들의 차이를 알아본 결과, 자아존중감, 대학생활만족도 및 사회문화인지도가 낮고, 중소도시에 위치한 대학, 1학년, 인문사회계열 학생일수록 학교이탈의도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 학생들의 자아존중감과 사회･문화인지도에 따라 대학생활만족도에 차이가 있는가를 알아보기 위해 상관관계분석을 실시한 결과, 자아존중감이 높고, 사회문화인지도가 높을수록 더욱 대학생활에 만족하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학교이탈의도에 통계적으로 의미 있는 영향을 미치는 변수들은 학교위치(중소도시), 성별, 전공계열(경상계열), 학년, 부모지지, 자아존중감, 대학생활만족도 및 사회･문화인지도 등 이었다. 넷째, 대학생의 학교이탈의도에 대해 경기도 지역의 도시와 그 외 지역 도시 간에 비교한 결과, 자아존중감 및 사회문화인지도는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다. 반면, 대학생활만족도는 경기지역 대학생들에게서 높게 나타났으며 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research is to investigate the factors related to the withdrawal intention of students in local private universities and to examine the differences between universities in Gyeonggi and other provinces. To do so, a survey was conducted to understand private university students’ intention to quit. The results of the survey are as follows. First, the students who were prone to withdrawal intentions had low self-esteem; felt a low level of satisfaction with university life; or displayed weak social and cultural awareness. In particular, university students in small towns, freshmen, and students majoring in the humanities and social sciences indicated a high intention of withdrawal. Second, correlation analysis showed that self-esteem and sociocultural awareness levels were positively correlated with campus life satisfaction. Third, statistical significant variables included the locations of universities (small and medium cities), gender, major (business and economics), grades, parental assistance, self-esteem, campus life satisfaction, and the sociocultural awareness of a university. Fourth, regional differences were found to have no influence on self-esteem and sociocultural awareness, whereas students in the Gyeonggi area displayed a higher level of satisfaction with their campus lives.
